Little Grass Frog
Pseudacris ocularis

The Little Grass Frog (Pseudacris ocularis) is the smallest native frog to the United States.  This tiny little hylid is so small it is often difficult to find and many people assume its high pitched "fingernail over comb teeth" call comes from an insect.  An adult can easily sit on an adult person's fingernail.

Here are a series of calls from an individual from the Ocala National Forest in Florida.

The following recording is a subset of the previous recording with two of the shorter call followed by two of the longer calls.

This is the spectrogram from that short series of calls.  The calls are represented by the white marks.  Notice that each call is a high pitched series of upward slurring notes.  The short calls have a separate entrance note.
