Post-Panama 2026 Lifelist update

Emerald Glassfrog (Espadarana proseblepon)
Canopy Lodge, Anton Valley, Panama

I decided after coming back from the Herpetology at the Isthmus tour in Panama this summer to update and clean up my lifelist.  I recorded 22 species of anuran in Panama during (and around) that trip. I added one, make that TWO new species and got better recordings of several other species for which my previous recordings were pretty poor.

My new species was the Leaf Litter Toad (Rhaebo haematiticus).

OK, hold the presses.....I got another new frog thanks to the ID skills of Roberto Ibanez on iNaturalist.

Caracas Snouted Treefrog (Scinax rostratus)

 _________________________________

The species I improved my recordings of were:

Panama Humming Frog (Elachistocleis panamensis)

Panama Humming Frog from south of Pacora, Panama

Spotted Foam-nest Frog (Leptodactylus insularum) - the popping sound

Spotted Foam-nest Frog from south of Pacora, Panama

Pratt's Rocket Frog (Colostethus pratti)

Pratt's Rocket Frog from Cerro Gaital, Panama

Banded Rainfrog (Pristimantis taeniatus) - the short "trilled crackle"

Banded Frog from the Canopy Tower, Panama

Yellow-dyer Tink Frog (Diasporus citrinobapheus)

Yellow-dyer Tink Frog from Anton Valley, Panama

and the other species I recorded included:
Striped Rocket Frog (Allobates talamancae)
Red-webbed Treefrog (Boana rufitela)
Sabinal Frog (Leptodactylus melanonotus)
Harlequin Treefrog (Dendropsophus ebraccatus)
Tatayo's Glassfrog (Hyalinobatrachium tatyoi)
TĂșngara Frog (Engystomops pustulosus)
Mexican White-lipped Frog (Leptodactylus fragilis)
Panama Snouted Treefrog (Scinax altae)
Fitzinger's Robber Frog (Craugastor fitzingeri)
Yellow Treefrog (Dendropsophus microcephalus)
Savage's Thin-toed Frog (Leptodactylus savagei)
Masked Treefrog (Smilisca phaeota)
Panamanian Granular Toad (Rhinella centralis)
Rosenberg's Gladiator Frog (Boana rosenbergi)

I also got a new species for Panama, the Whistling Grass Frog (Leptodactylus fuscus) which I had only previously recorded in Trinidad. When I recorded it, I called it the Mexican White-lipped Frog (L. fragilis) which sounds very similar and was also calling in the field with the Whistling Grass Frog. I will probably need to make a comparison post to hear how similar their calls are!

So as I reach midyear in 2026, my recording lifelist is now at 145 species, in 58 genera, and 15 families.  I thought I was at 144 earlier, but I have a few species in here I may not have recorded (i.e. my recording may be a different species - e.g. Eleutherodactylus portoricensis, Smilisca manisorum).  Excuses for more travel?

Can I get to 150 species this year?  It will be tough, but worth a shot!

2026 Lifelist Update

It has become an annual tradition to upload my recording lifelist early in the spring to add any species I added last year.  I didn't get any new ones over the Christmas holidays in 2025 since I was in New Zealand (not an easy spot to record frogs!).   But I did add a new lifer in early 2026 when one of my frogs from Trinidad in 2018 was identified on iNaturalist as Adenomera hylaedactyla by another iNaturalist user.

So as the season begins in 2026, my recording lifelist is now at 143 species, in 57 genera, and 15 families.

Can I get to 150 species this year?  Headed back to Panama, so....maybe?

Costa Rica 2025

Ghost Glass Frog (Sachatamia ilex)
near Siquirres, Costa Rica

I spent 7 days in Costa Rica this August.  Unlike previous trips to CR, this was a frog recording trip. My previous trips have all been birding trips where I got a chance to do a few minutes or recording along the way.  This trip was planned as a frog recording trip with a bit of butterfly watching/photography in the intervening waking hours.

So for that reason, I recorded quite a few species of frogs (~22) including the following new ones (I will provide links to the new blog pages as I make them):

San Carlos Treefrog (Dendropsophus phlebodes)
Blue-sided Leaf Frog (Agalychnis annae)
Parachuting Red-eyed Leaf Frog (Agalychnis saltator)
Lemur Leaf Frog (Agalychnis lemur)
Mahogany Treefrog (Tlalocohyla loquax)
Dwarf Glassfrog (Teratohyla spinosa)
Ghost Glassfrog (Sachatamia ilex)

I also heard another species calling, but missed out recording because my recorder seems to have glitched?   I have several recordings from that location, but 3 of them have no sound. đŸ˜ It was undoubtedly user error, but if I can salvage something I will be able to add a recording of

Gliding Leaf Frog (Agalychnis spurrelli)

Of course, I ran across some old friends as well and was happy to record these species again!

Red-eyed Leaf Frog (Agalychnis callidryas)
Boulenger's Snouted Treefrog (Scinax boulengeri)
Snouted Treefrog (Scinax elaeochora)
Hourglass Treefrog (Dendropsophus ebraccatus)
Yellow Treefrog (Dendropsophus microcephalus)
Northern Smokey Jungle Frog (Leptodactylus savagei)
Sabinal Frog (Leptodactylus melanonotus)
Mexican White-lipped Frog (Leptodactylus fragilis)
Fleischmann's Glass Frog (Hyalinobatrachium fleischmanni)
Yellow-flecked Glass Frog (Sachatamia albomaculata)
Giant Toad (Rhinella horribilis)
Striped Rocketfrog (Allobates talamancae)
Strawberry Dart Frog (Oophaga pumilio)
Tink Frog (Diasporus diastema)

So my recording lifelist is now at 142 species, in 48 genera, and 15 families.

* - I am aware of the massive 2025 revision of the Australian Pelodryadid frogs. There are a lot of new genera and reassignments of species. I will probably slowly have to incorporate these changes into my blog slowly when I get the time. It will involve a lot of name changes!  I guess the good news it I get a bunch of new genera on my lifelist?

June 2024 additions from Panama

Tatayo's Glass Frog (Hyalinobatrachium tatayoi)

Spent a couple of weeks in Panama during the summer of 2024. I went on the Canopy Family Herpetology at the Isthmus tour, which was great. Of the 37 species of anurans we encountered, I was able to record at least 24 species. Of those, at least 15 species were new to my recording lifelist including:

Panamanian Granular Toad (Rhinella centralis)
Columbian Four-eyed Frog (Pleurodema brachyops)
Striped Rocket Frog (Allobates talamancae)
Tatayo's Glass Frog (Hyalinobatrachium tatayoi)
Emerald Glass Frog (Espadarana prosoblepon)
Vicente's Poison Frog (Oophaga vicente)
Rainforest Rocket Frog (Silverstoneia flotator)
Pratt's Poison Frog (Colostethus pratti)
Spotted Foam-nest Frog (Leptodactylus insularum)
Slim-fingered Rainfrog (Craugastor crassidigitus)
Banded Robber Frog (Pristimantis taeniatus)
Panamanian Snouted Treefrog (Scinax altae)
Panama Humming Frog (Elachistocleis panamensis)
and maybe a new Tink Frog species (Diasporus sp.) - still working on identifying these!

UPDATE November 2024 - I figured out the new species - Yellow Dyer Dink Frog (Diasporus citrinobapheus)

UPDATE December 2024 - I discovered yet another new species in my recordings - Red-webbed Treefrog (Boana rufitela)!

UPDATE January 2025 - I went back to Panama and got another new one, the Pug-nosed Treefrog (Smilisca sila).

UPDATE February 2025 - Thanks to an ID from iNaturalist.org, I found out I had recorded even another new species for Panama, the Yellow-flecked Glassfrog (Sachatamia albomaculata).

I also added new recordings of some species I had already recorded, including:

Granular Glass Frog (Cochranella granulosa)
Rosenberg's Gladiator Frog (Boana rosenbergi)
Harlequin Treefrog (Dendropsophus ebraccatus)
Yellow Treefrog (Dendropsophus microcephalus)
Sabinal Frog (Leptodactylus melanonotus)
Mexican White-lipped Frog (Leptodactylus fragilis)
Northern Smokey Jungle Frog (Leptodactylus savagei)
Tink Frog (Diasporus diastema)
TĂșngara Frog (Engystomops pustulosus)

Over the next few weeks, I will be working on getting these new entries online.

Lifelist Updates for 2024

Spent the holiday season of 2023/24 on a trip to the top end of Australia.

Didn't spend a lot of time recording frogs but I did get to add a few species to my recording lifelist.   I am still working my way through my recordings and identifying new choristers so this list will grow hopefully.   Some of my IDs are still tentative so I hope to get some feedback through iNaturalist.

Black-shinned Rocket Frog (Litoria tornieri)
Northern Sedge Frog (Litoria bicolor)
Desert Treefrog (Litoria rubella) - a newly split species
Western Laughing Treefrog (Litoria ridibunda) - a newly described species
Fat/Jabiru Toadlet (Uperoleia crassa/arenicola)
Stonemason Toadlet (Uperoleia lithomoda)
Remote Froglet (Crinia remota)
Long-footed Frog (Ranoidea longipes)
Daly Waters Frog (Ranoidea maculosa)
Australian Giant Frog (Ranoidea australis)
Hidden-ear Frog (Ranoidea cryptotis)

Although not a new species, I also got better recordings of another Australian species:

Ornate Burrowing Frog (Platyplectrum ornatum)

I will be adding the species accounts and recordings for those species in the coming weeks as I confirm their IDs.

So, a bit of updating to the lifelist means it looks like this....
