The Granular Glass Frog (Cochranella granulosa) is yet another species of frog I have recorded without ever seeing. đ This in spite of the fact that they are widespread and common within their range from Costa Rica through Panama.
When this species calls they sit high on leaves usually overhanging streams. I heard quite a few calling on this trip to the Gulfo Dulce region of Costa Rica, but never could find one. They also have the habit of calling rather unpredictably and only for a few seconds, making tracking one down even harder. The call of this dainty little frog is anything but dainty. It is a shrill "creeek, creeek, creeek" with a nasal trill to the "creek" sound. It is quite loud and carries well through the forest, unlike some other calls of Centrolenid frogs.
I heard these frogs a lot, but I only got a few chances to record one because of the unpredictable nature of their calls and the fact that they call from above your head on leaves usually.
